Put two Poddolls on the worktable and they can look like they met at the same studio but took very different routes home.
One is round and cheerful. One is taller and looks mildly offended by the lighting. One may arrive in an apron, apparently ready to supervise the snack situation.
That is not an accident. We start with natural seed pod shells, not identical plastic blanks. The shell gives us the first set of rules.

Pod dolls look different because the shells look different before we touch them. Their width, curve, edges, texture, and balance all affect what can happen next. Then we add the face, hair, clothing, ears, and props by hand.
The studio has a style. The shell still gets a vote.
The Shell Does Not Come With Factory Settings
A factory base can be copied all afternoon. A natural shell cannot. One may be wide, another narrow, another tilted enough to have opinions about where a face belongs.
We do not flatten every odd mark out of existence. We look for what the shell can do well: sit, hang, carry a face, or make room for a ridiculous little hat. That is the useful part of the variation.

Move the Face, Change the Character
Once we have the shell, placement does a surprising amount of the work. Eyes near the widest point read differently from eyes tucked near an edge. Add pointed ears and you are headed toward cat. Add floppy ears and an apron and the meeting has gone somewhere else entirely.
We are not discovering a secret animal hidden in the pod. We are making choices around a shape with real limits. Sometimes it gives us options. Sometimes it gives us one decent spot and closes the door behind it.

Why Your Brain Sees a Face
There is a name for seeing a face in two dots and a curve: pareidolia. It is the same reason a cloud, a car grille, or an electrical outlet can look as if it has news for you.
Shells already come with curves, seams, marks, and edges. Add eyes and a mouth, and the brain does the rest at impressive speed. The pod did not arrive with a personality. Humans are just very committed face-finders.
Clothing and Props Finish the Job
Hair changes the outline. Ears change the silhouette. A bow, glasses, a coffee cup, or a soft star tells your eye where to look next. Those small details do not erase the shell; they give it a role in the character.
The same is true in DIY kits. The general idea is there, but the final placement still belongs to the shell and the person making it.

At the worktable, we do not automatically reach for the most symmetrical shell. We check whether it can rest or hang, where a face will fit, and whether the natural surface should stay visible.
Some shells make the plan obvious. Others require a cup of tea and a long stare. We count that as studio work, mostly because we have to.
